The second generation of the Volvo C70 was introduced in 2005 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Unlike its predecessor, which was available as both a coupe and convertible, the 2005 model debuted as a stylish coupe-cabriolet. Under Ford’s ownership at the time, Volvo sought to carve out a unique position in the premium segment with the C70. Unlike competitors such as the Mercedes-Benz CLK or BMW 3-Series, the C70’s standout feature was its retractable hard-top roof - a blend of coupe solidity and convertible freedom. At the rear, the trademark “Volvo shoulders” over the rear wheels emphasized the brand’s signature styling cues, while the taillights echoed the design language of the S80 sedan. The super slim “floating” center stack and console added to the open cabin feel. Trunk capacity was practical for the segment: 17 cubic feet (480 liters) with the roof up, and 7 cubic feet (200 liters) when the roof was folded down.
Engine options were diverse, including three gasoline and four diesel variants. Transmission choices varied between 5- or 6-speed manuals and automatics, depending on the engine.
