Due to the rising demand for SUVs, Volkswagen launched the compact-sized Tiguan in autumn 2007 at the Frankfurt Motor Show, where it quickly became a huge success. Despite the global economic crisis that followed shortly after, the Tiguan was well received by customers worldwide. Though some considered it the little brother of the Touareg, the Tiguan was more accurately described as the bigger brother of the Passat B6, sharing the same platform as the Passat CC. The second generation of the Tiguan debuted at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, marking Volkswagen’s fresh approach to the competitive compact SUV segment. Instead of simply updating the original, Volkswagen rebuilt the Tiguan from the ground up, utilizing the MQB platform - its first SUV application. The 2016 Tiguan gained a broader stance with a grille featuring two horizontal chrome lines and slimmer headlights. Unlike the hatchback-like first generation, the new Tiguan embraced a true SUV design, including a long-wheelbase version capable of seating seven passengers.
Volkswagen’s performance expertise culminated in the introduction of the Tiguan R, launched alongside the 2020 facelift. This sporty, 320-horsepower compact SUV could compete with many hot hatches on the road while also handling mild off-road conditions. The Tiguan R featured a broad black front grille, silver mirror caps with LED turn signals, and distinct headlights reminiscent of the Golf VIII. At the rear, the “R” badge proudly sat below the VW emblem, complemented by a sporty roof spoiler and a quad-exhaust system unique to this model. The Tiguan R also offered a hands-free trunk opening system as standard, enhancing convenience.
