Volkswagen Jetta GLI History (2010–2024)
2010 – Final Years of the Mk5 GLI
The GLI nameplate was absent in the U.S. for 2010 as Volkswagen transitioned from the Mk5 (A5) to the all-new Mk6 Jetta. The Mk5 GLI, known for its independent rear suspension and 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, had a cult following, but it was pricey and shared too much with the GTI to stand out on its own.
2011 – Mk6 Jetta GLI Debuts (A6 Platform)
Volkswagen reintroduced the GLI for the sixth-generation Jetta. This version aimed to make performance more affordable, using the proven EA888 2.0T engine (200 hp) and sharing many components with the Golf GTI. It featured a multi-link rear suspension, unique exterior accents (red grille stripe, honeycomb lower grille), sport seats, and a sport-tuned chassis.Despite criticism for the base Jetta’s cost-cutting (e.g., rear drum brakes, hard plastics), the GLI retained premium touches like independent rear suspension and improved interior materials. Enthusiasts appreciated the balance of practicality and performance.
2015 – Light Refresh for the GLI
Volkswagen gave the Jetta GLI a mid-cycle update in 2015 with sharper front-end styling, new LED lighting, and updated infotainment options. It also featured brake-based torque vectoring (XDS) for enhanced cornering stability. Power output remained 210 hp by then, but throttle response and chassis tuning improved. The DSG gearbox remained a popular option alongside the manual.
2016–2018 – Final Years of Mk6 GLI
By 2016, the Mk6 GLI was becoming dated, and performance enthusiasts began to turn to other compact sport sedans. Still, its fun-to-drive dynamics, decent fuel economy, and understated design kept it relevant until production ended in 2018.
2019 – All-New Mk7 Jetta GLI (MQB Platform)
Volkswagen launched the seventh-generation Jetta GLI, built on the MQB platform, a significant improvement in structure and tech. It used the newer 2.0-liter EA888 Gen 3 engine, delivering 228 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque - a big step up in performance. The GLI also regained a fully independent multi-link rear suspension, shared with the GTI.It included VAQ electronically-controlled limited-slip differential, dual exhaust, and sporty design touches like red interior accents and honeycomb grille inserts. VW offered both a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission, making it a true enthusiast’s sedan.
2021 – First Refresh of Mk7 GLI
The GLI received its first visual and tech update. Changes included updated bumpers, a revised black honeycomb grille with red trim, new LED fog lights, and black mirror caps. Inside, it gained Volkswagen’s MIB3 infotainment system and a 10-inch digital instrument cluster. While the exterior changes were modest, interior tech and quality took a significant step forward, aligning the GLI more closely with newer Volkswagens. It remained a standout in its class for those wanting a blend of performance, tech, and subtle style.
2024 – Second Refresh: GLI Modernized
In summer 2024, VW gave the GLI its second and more significant update. The styling sharpened further, but the big leap was in tech integration and overall refinement. While the drivetrain and suspension layout remained unchanged - still riding on the MQB A1 platform with the same 228-hp engine - the GLI now featured:
This second refresh positioned the GLI as a mature performance sedan for drivers wanting GTI fun in a more grown-up package. It retained the manual gearbox option, a rarity in 2024, and continued to serve as a unique value proposition in a shrinking field of sporty compact sedans.
