The Toyota Tacoma made its debut in 1995 as a compact pickup truck. Over the course of its first two generations, the Japanese automaker gradually increased the vehicle’s size, eventually reclassifying it as a mid-size pickup truck.
The 2024 model year heralds the beginning of the fourth Tacoma generation, aiming to uphold the reputation of one of the most celebrated pickup trucks in North America over the past two decades. Buyers will have the choice between eight trim levels: SR, SR5, TRD PreRunner, TRD Sport, TRD Off Road, Limited, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter.
The new Tacoma retains the essence of its predecessors while being the first model built on Toyota’s TNGA-F global truck platform, featuring an entirely redesigned structure. Its more angular design gives the vehicle a contemporary off-road appearance, emphasizing its capabilities. The traditional leaf springs have been replaced by a new multi-link rear suspension, enhancing handling and stability. The TRD Off-Road variant will feature Bilstein remote reservoir monotube shocks for improved heat management.
To match its enhanced handling capabilities, Toyota introduced the iForce MAX hybrid powertrain option, delivering 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque to tackle even the most challenging off-road obstacles. An electronically controlled locking rear differential can distribute power equally (50/50) between the rear wheels when needed.
For those seeking a more engaging driving experience, Toyota offers a six-speed intelligent manual transmission with automatic rev-matching and anti-stall technology. The TRD Pro trim comes equipped with an IsoDynamic Performance Seat, which reduces driver fatigue by minimizing vibrations and shocks through simultaneous vertical and lateral movements.
The Trailhunter trim is designed as a ready-to-go overlanding vehicle, requiring no additional modifications. It includes Adaptive Variable Suspension, an integrated high-output air compressor, and a reinforced bed rack capable of supporting extra weight from camping equipment such as tents.
To enhance the overall experience, the 2024 Tacoma features a 14-inch high-quality touchscreen and a premium JBL 10-speaker system. The setup also includes a JBL Bluetooth speaker that functions as a center channel when docked and can be undocked for up to six hours of entertainment during tailgate parties, camping trips, and other social gatherings centered around the truck.
