At the 2018 New York Auto Show, Toyota unveiled the fifth generation of its compact SUV model, the Rav4, abandoning its previously understated design approach.
By the time SUV sales began to soar, Toyota had already established itself with the first generation of the Rav4. Thanks to its solid reputation in the 4x4 segment and reliable models, it became a global bestseller. However, the vehicle’s design was somewhat restrained, failing to fully reflect its capabilities – until the arrival of the fifth generation.
The five-door Rav-4 showcased a striking angular front design, featuring swept-back headlights and intricate multi-stage A-shapes on the bumper and grille. The side profile boasted sculpted door panels and prominent wheel arches, emphasizing the manufacturer’s off-road prowess. The rear end underwent a transformation, abandoning the previous flat design in favor of a forward-sloping C-pillar and windscreen.
The interior embraced the angular theme, with nearly all dashboard elements exhibiting sharp lines, save for the circular steering wheel and climate control knobs. A prominent floating touchscreen display mounted atop the center stack showcased the Toyota Entune 3.0 system. The front cabin featured bucket seats divided by a high center console for enhanced comfort, while the rear offered 60/40 split-folding seats with a lowered center tunnel.
Mechanically, the vehicle offered a choice between a single gasoline engine and three hybrid options, paired with either an eight-speed automatic transmission or a CVT. Buyers could opt for either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive configurations.
