Subaru's history with all-wheel-drive vehicles has been a cornerstone of its brand identity, and it was no surprise when the Justy was transformed into a crossover vehicle. However, behind the Subaru badge, the Justy was essentially a Suzuki. Both Subaru and Suzuki were renowned for producing small vehicles, with Subaru gaining fame for its world rally-winning Impreza range and Suzuki known for its off-road vehicles. This partnership resulted in the 2004 Justy, a small but capable crossover that combined the best features of both brands.
The 2004 Subaru Justy was a unique vehicle for its time, with higher ground clearance and a compact form. Its front fascia featured rectangular headlights that swept back over the hood. Unlike the Suzuki Ignis, the Justy had a distinct grille and bumper design, with larger fog lights that resembled the Impreza's round headlights. The blue Subaru badge in the center of the grille further distinguished it as part of Subaru’s lineup. The tall greenhouse and straight roof with an ascending beltline were also design elements shared by both the Justy and the Ignis.
Inside, the Justy offered enough space for four adults due to its high roof. However, legroom in the back could be tight for taller passengers, especially those over 6 ft (180 cm). The small trunk was adequate for city driving but could become cramped on longer trips. For added cargo space, the rear split-folding bench seat could be folded down, making the Justy more practical for longer journeys with fewer passengers. The instrument cluster had a unique binocular-style design, which was another distinguishing feature of the Justy.
Because Subaru primarily used boxer engines, which were not suitable for the small crossover, the Justy's engines were carried over from its sibling, the Suzuki Ignis. Depending on the market, the Justy offered three engine options, all paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox. As expected from a Subaru vehicle, all versions of the Justy were equipped with all-wheel-drive systems, making it a more capable vehicle than most others in its class.
