Mazda unveiled a new model at the 2021 Los Angeles Auto Show that marked a fresh chapter in its lineup. Unlike a downsized CX-5 or a stretched version of another vehicle, the CX-50 was designed to carve out its own identity, especially targeting the competitive mid-size crossover segment.
The CX-50 became Mazda’s first vehicle manufactured at the MTM (Mazda Toyota Manufacturing) plant in Huntsville, Alabama, representing a new collaboration and production milestone for the brand.
Design-wise, the CX-50 adopted a more aggressive and rugged look compared to the CX-5, sharing closer styling cues with its smaller sibling, the CX-30. The front fascia emphasized toughness, signaling off-road readiness rather than just urban use. This rugged character was further enhanced by black, unpainted plastic moldings around the wheel arches, lending the vehicle a more adventurous appeal.
At the rear, the taillight design drew inspiration from the Mazda 3 Hatchback, featuring clear U-shaped parking light lines. Below the bumper, Mazda added a stylish aluminum-look plastic skid plate flanked by dual exhaust outlets, reinforcing the sporty, outdoorsy image.
Inside, Mazda took a step up with a premium and minimalist cabin design. While many competitors fully replaced analog dials with digital TFT displays, Mazda retained a hybrid approach: traditional speedometer dials framed a centrally floating infotainment screen. Control of the infotainment system was intuitive, thanks to a rotary knob positioned on the center console, accessible to both driver and front passenger.
Although slightly smaller than the CX-5, the CX-50 offered a practical five-seat configuration with a split-folding rear bench, emphasizing versatility for everyday driving needs.
