Kia boldly introduced its flagship SUV, the Borrego, at the 2008 North American International Auto Show, defying the financial crisis that challenged many automakers. While others moved toward unibody crossovers, Kia stayed true to ruggedness by launching the body-on-frame 2009 Kia Borrego. Featuring three-row seating, powerful V6 and V8 engines, and an available low-range 4WD system, the Borrego offered a unique blend of capability and space. Although its fuel efficiency wasn’t its strongest suit, the SUV remained a solid choice for customers seeking durability and versatility. The Borrego was sold in Canada and other markets under the Mohave nameplate.
Designed by Peter Schreyer, the 2009 Borrego impressed with a bold front fascia, including corner-mounted HID headlights flanking a rectangular chromed grille and a two-tone plastic bumper housing fog lamps. Black plastic cladding around the wheel arches and sides created a muscular yet practical look, protecting the vehicle from everyday scratches and enhancing its off-road appeal. Side steps eased access for third-row passengers, while wrap-around taillights and a standard tow hitch rounded out the exterior design.
Inside, the Borrego featured a driver-focused dashboard with clear controls, leather-wrapped steering wheel with integrated audio and cruise controls, and comfortable seating for up to seven passengers. Available leather upholstery and heated front seats added a touch of luxury to this rugged SUV.
Under the hood, Kia offered a robust 3.8-liter V6 with a five-speed automatic transmission, delivering power to either rear or all four wheels. For those wanting more muscle, the 4.6-liter V8 engine from the Hyundai Genesis was available, providing increased towing and performance capabilities. In markets where it was known as the Mohave, a 3.0-liter turbodiesel with AWD completed the lineup.
