Infiniti introduced the third generation of the I-Series - the I30 and later the I35 - in 1998 for the Japanese market as the Nissan Cefiro, with U.S. sales beginning the following year as the 2000 model year. Like many other Infiniti models, it was a premium adaptation of a Japan-only Nissan, tailored specifically for American luxury car buyers.
In the U.S., the I30/I35 competed directly with its Japanese rivals - the Acura TL and Lexus ES300 - and even went up against domestic options like the Cadillac Catera. Inside, the cabin featured gentle, flowing lines that mimicked the body’s design language. The center stack, dashboard, and even the air vents carried soft, rounded edges for a cohesive and elegant look. While the layout bore a strong resemblance to the Maxima’s, premium trim, upgraded upholstery, and softer surfaces made the I30/I35 feel significantly more upscale. Thanks to a 2-inch wheelbase extension, rear-seat passengers enjoyed improved legroom, adding to the model's luxury credentials.
Under the hood, Infiniti installed its latest VQ-series V6 engine, which delivered more power than the previous generation. Despite the power bump, however, the I30/I35 posted slower 0–60 mph times compared to its 1994 predecessor. Still, it excelled in everyday comfort, reliability, and refined road manners.
