Infiniti introduced a new performance coupe in 2007 as the successor to the aging G35. With the G37 Coupe, Infiniti created more than just a two-door version of the G37 Sedan - it shared its FM platform with performance models like the Nissan 350Z and 370Z, as well as Infiniti's M, EX, and FX series.
From the outside, the G37 Coupe combined grand touring elegance with aggressive sports car proportions. A long hood, arched roofline, and a sloping rear gave it a fluid, purposeful stance. At the front, boomerang-style headlights flanked a chrome-surrounded grille with horizontal slats. The front bumper featured a large center air intake and two side vents to direct airflow to the brakes.
The interior showed a leap in refinement over the G35, using higher-quality materials and finishes. A leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear selector added a touch of luxury. However, despite its late 2007 debut at the New York Motor Show, the coupe arrived with a dated infotainment system lacking touchscreen functionality. Infiniti positioned it as more intuitive, but customer feedback suggested otherwise. Front passengers benefited from high-bolstered sport bucket seats offering excellent lateral support, while rear occupants had minimal space and virtually no legroom - more symbolic than usable.
Seeing the rise of M-Performance, AMG, S-line, and R variants from German competitors, Infiniti launched its own high-performance division: IPL (Infiniti Performance Line). In 2011, engineers applied the IPL treatment to the G37 Coupe to compete with BMW's 335i Coupe, Mercedes' CLK 350, and Audi’s S5. While the IPL G37 fell just short of fully matching their performance, it made a strong showing.
Built on the same robust platform as the 370Z, the G37 IPL was well-engineered but weighed down by numerous standard features. Still, Infiniti managed to extract more power from its 3.7-liter V6, achieving 348 horsepower and 276 lb-ft of torque. A 6-speed manual was standard, while a 7-speed automatic transmission was optional. The options list was simple - just color and transmission - since navigation, power seats, sunroof, XM radio, heated seats, and alloy wheels were all standard.
Performance figures were solid: 0-62 mph in 5.8 seconds and a top speed of 168 mph, surpassing many German rivals limited to 155 mph.
