The third generation of the G35 Sedan marked a major evolution over its predecessor, which looked more like a Nissan Primera than a premium vehicle. Nissan already had a solid rear-wheel-drive platform used for the 350Z, and it made more sense to develop a new sedan on that chassis than to start from scratch. By 2001, Infiniti had earned growing respect in the premium car market, and the G35 benefitted from that credibility with strong initial sales.
At the time, the BMW 3-Series was the gold standard in the compact premium sedan segment. Even so, Nissan’s luxury brand Infiniti stepped up with an original design and a performance-focused platform. Penned by Hiroshi Hasegawa, the G35’s long hood, wide grille, and vertically stacked headlights gave it a distinctive look. From the profile, the short decklid and coupe-like rear cabin conveyed a sense of athleticism.
Infiniti refreshed the G35 in 2005, and instead of settling for cosmetic tweaks, they invested heavily in improving the car’s appearance and interior experience. The updated exterior featured more aggressive boomerang-style headlights, a redesigned grille with a taller center section, and a new lower front bumper divided into three distinct openings. At the rear, new taillights and a reshaped trunk lid added to its premium styling.
Inside, the dashboard was completely redesigned. The instrument cluster received new dials with red needles and a modernized layout, including swapped positions for the tachometer and speedometer, with an LCD screen in between. A new infotainment system with a color display was added to the center stack, and the steering wheel was revised with reorganized controls for audio and cruise functions. These changes helped the G35 feel more upscale and aligned with customer expectations in the luxury market.
Power came from the same VQ35 engine found in previous models, but Infiniti upgraded it to produce over 300 horsepower. For the first time, an all-wheel-drive version was offered in addition to the standard rear-wheel-drive layout, further enhancing year-round usability.
