Kia made its debut of the fifth-generation hybrid Sportage at the 2021 Los Angeles Auto Show, introducing a new eco-friendly variant to its popular SUV lineup.
Having established itself as a familiar name across both American continents, the Sportage underwent significant transformations over the years. Initially positioned as a modest and compact vehicle within its class, it evolved into one of the segment’s longest models by 2022. The evolution was particularly notable in terms of construction – while the inaugural generation featured a robust body-on-frame design (though not universally available), the 2023 iteration emerged as a globally appealing premium offering.
Externally, the HEV variant shared many design cues with other Sportage models. It retained the signature floating-design “Tiger-nose” grille element at the front and boomerang-shaped LED daytime running lights. The rear end showcased unified notch-style taillights connected by a horizontal black strip spanning the width of the vehicle, complemented by an HEV badge on the tailgate. The most distinctive visual difference between the hybrid and other versions was the exclusive design of the 17- or 18-inch alloy wheels.
Inside, the cabin matched the exterior’s modern aesthetic with a cutting-edge design. A 25-inch expansive display dominated the dashboard, integrating both a 12.3-inch instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen under a single pane of glass. The dashboard’s asymmetric layout provided the driver with convenient access to controls while offering rear passengers generous legroom and an open, airy ambiance. Depending on the trim level, the vehicle could be equipped with a Harman-Kardon audio system, elevating it to the level of a mobile concert venue.
The powertrain represented the most significant differentiation between the HEV and its counterparts. The hybrid system consisted of a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine with direct fuel injection, delivering 226 horsepower (229 PS) to a six-speed automatic transmission. An additional 44 kW electric motor contributed to exceptional fuel economy within its class. The HEV was available with either front-wheel or all-wheel drive configurations, depending on the selected trim level.
