For the 2024 model year, Hyundai delivered a comprehensive update to the eighth-generation Sonata, introducing significant changes including the brand’s first all-wheel drive system and the addition of an N-Line performance variant.
The transformation of the 2024 Hyundai Sonata was so extensive that it raised questions about whether it should be considered a new generation rather than just a facelift. Unlike typical updates that focus on addressing minor issues or refreshing styling, this revision encompassed substantial improvements to the exterior, interior, and powertrain. Notably, it became the first Sonata to offer a true sporty version capable of competing with some sports cars in terms of performance, despite remaining a mid-size sedan.
Aesthetic changes began at the front, where the previous large headlights extending onto the fenders were replaced with a modern design featuring an LED light strip spanning the width of the vehicle as daytime running lights. Below, the main grille on the bumper apron was flanked by LED headlights integrated into sleek, angled side intakes, complemented by a subtle chin spoiler at the bumper’s base.
The profile retained the sporty cab-rearward design with a sloping greenhouse, similar to the original model. However, the rear end received a complete overhaul, showcasing a distinctive red light pattern stretching side-to-side that formed an H-shaped daytime running light, with separate LED brake lights and turn signals below. A dark trim with small fins was added across the rear deck and sides, while a wide diffuser with one or two exhaust outlets (depending on trim level) was positioned under the rear bumper.
Interior upgrades were equally impressive, abandoning the traditional instrument cluster and separate touchscreen found in the 2020 Sonata. The 2024 model featured a sweeping dual 12.3-inch display integrated behind a single pane of glass, with the driver’s side dedicated to the instrument panel and the center stack housing the infotainment system. Enhancements included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with complimentary lifetime Bluelink+ connectivity offering over-the-air updates and additional features.
Mechanical improvements were also substantial. The previous 1.6-liter turbo engine was replaced with three new powertrain options: a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated engine, a 2.5-liter turbocharged unit, and a hybrid system pairing a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated engine with an electric motor. The all-wheel drive system, a Sonata first, was available with the SEL trim. The more powerful turbocharged variant was reserved for the N-Line model, while the hybrid option was exclusive to the SEL and Limited trims.
