At the start of 2021, the Korean automaker unveiled the second generation of its electric Ioniq 5 model, showcasing a striking design with CUV-inspired aesthetics.
Drawing inspiration from the Hyundai 45 EV concept study and paying homage to the brand’s 45-year legacy, the Ioniq 5 was constructed on the innovative E-GMP platform. This platform provided an extended wheelbase and contributed to the vehicle’s robust, muscular appearance. The groundbreaking sci-fi design elements and angular, sculpted side panels marked a new era in the Korean manufacturer’s design philosophy.
Interestingly, the 2021 Ioniq 5 drew inspiration from Hyundai’s inaugural production car, the 1975 Pony, designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro. The front end featured a distinctive clamshell design that downplayed the grille and positioned the company’s emblem on the hood. The impressive wheelbase for its class translated into an exceptionally spacious interior.
The interior embraced minimalist design principles to an unprecedented extent. The dashboard was cleverly divided into upper and lower sections, with a sparse arrangement of buttons on the center console. The driver was greeted by a 12-inch TFT display for the instrument panel, while a separate 12-inch screen for the infotainment system was centrally mounted on a shared panel. Front passengers benefited from an integrated footrest for enhanced comfort during long trips. The rear cabin accommodated three passengers comfortably, thanks to the flat floor and generous 3.0-meter (118-inch) wheelbase, ensuring ample legroom for all.
Hyundai provided two powertrain configurations for the 2021 Ioniq 5. Buyers could opt for either a rear-mounted motor with rear-wheel drive or a dual-motor setup with one motor per axle. The vehicle also came with two battery pack options. A significant technological advancement was the electric architecture supporting high-voltage, high-power charging capabilities of up to 800 volts.
