When Toyota sought to establish a luxury division, they introduced Lexus. Similarly, when Honda and Nissan ventured into the premium market, they launched Acura and Infiniti respectively. Hyundai is following this trend with its Genesis brand, which is why the unveiling of the 2020 Genesis G80 came as no surprise.
This vehicle represents a groundbreaking model built on an entirely new platform. At first glance, it may bear a resemblance to the Infiniti M, but closer inspection reveals distinctive features such as a pentagonal grille and quad-beam headlights that set it apart. While its design may not be revolutionary, it’s worth noting that Lexus faced similar criticism when it first entered the market.
The side profile features a droplining reminiscent of the second-generation Mercedes-Benz CLS. However, the vehicle introduces its own design language with double horizontal lines that connect the headlights and taillights. The roofline shares similarities with the Kia Stinger, which is understandable given that both vehicles belong to the Hyundai-Kia conglomerate.
Inside, the cabin exudes luxury, highlighted by a prominent 14.5-inch infotainment screen positioned centrally on the dashboard. The design enhances the sense of space through slender A-pillars that contribute to an expansive panoramic view. Sharing its platform with the new Genesis GV80 SUV, the G80 is expected to offer a 2.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine alongside a 3.5-liter V6 turbocharged powertrain.
