In 2016, Kia unveiled the second generation of the Forte series for the 2017 model year, introducing not only a sedan but also a five-door variant known as the Forte5.
Engineered as a budget-friendly option, the Forte5 shared its platform with the Hyundai Elantra and the European Kia Ceed. This allowed Kia to produce a competitively priced yet well-appointed vehicle that provided ample features for cost-effective transportation.
The exterior design adhered to the updated “Tiger nose” philosophy developed under Peter Schreyer’s leadership at Kia’s design studio. The styling bore similarities to its larger sibling, the Optima, featuring angular, swept-back headlights that contributed to a sporty appearance. The front fascia showcased a wide lower grille accented by fog lights on either side.
The interior was equipped with modern amenities expected in 2017, including an optional infotainment system compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, although the latter became available later. The model came in three trim levels: LX, EX, and the sport-oriented SX. The sportiest variant featured supportive bucket seats up front and a split-folding rear bench. While not exceptionally spacious, the trunk offered sufficient capacity for typical two-person usage.
Powering the Forte5 were two engine options: a 2.0-liter GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) unit and a more powerful 1.6-liter turbocharged GDI variant. Both engines were paired with a standard six-speed manual transmission, with the option of either a six-speed automatic or a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, respectively.
