In 2011, Hyundai made its debut in the full-size sedan market segment by presenting the fifth generation of the Grandeur/Azera at the Los Angeles Auto Show.
Despite having achieved success with other models in the budget car segment, Hyundai had previously struggled to penetrate the large sedan market. Earlier attempts with models like the XG30 and TG had failed to attract significant customer interest. However, with a complete overhaul of its design philosophy, the automaker launched the 2012 Grandeur as a premium upgrade for Sonata owners.
Although many manufacturers had abandoned the sharp-edged design trend, Hyundai successfully revived and improved upon it with the Grandeur (marketed as the Azera in certain regions). The vehicle showcased elegant, flowing lines with a distinctive front end characterized by retracted headlamps and an expansive chrome grille. The side profile featured a distinctive beltline that rose abruptly over the rear doors and quarter panels, positioning the car to rival the Toyota Avalon and Buick LaCrosse.
The interior of the Grandeur was equipped with an extensive array of standard features. The front seats came with both heating and cooling functions, while the driver’s area boasted a high-end touchscreen navigation system and an infotainment setup that exceeded typical expectations for the price range. The vehicle supported Bluetooth for phone calls and music streaming through a premium Infinity Logic 7 audio system with 12 speakers. Rear passengers benefited from ample legroom, though the back seat was most comfortable for two occupants.
Powering the Grandeur was a 3.3-liter V6 engine with gasoline direct injection, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The vehicle’s fully independent suspension contributed to a smooth and comfortable ride quality.
