In the diverse lineup of Honda vehicles worldwide, the Insight Hybrid remains somewhat enigmatic for many in China. Pioneering the use of a hybrid petrol-electric powertrain, Honda devoted careful attention to developing the Insight. Over its three generations, the model consistently integrated the latest hybrid technologies, with the first generation boasting a specially designed chassis that underscored Honda’s commitment to its heritage.
The idea of combining petrol and electric power in vehicles dates back to 1898 when Ferdinand Porsche engineered a petrol-electric hybrid car. Despite its innovative nature, early limitations in practicality and technical challenges confined it to a minor role in automotive history. It wasn’t until after several oil crises in the 20th century, coupled with advances in microelectronics and fuel injection technology, that engineers globally started exploring hybrid systems as a viable middle ground between conventional and alternative propulsion methods.
