In July 2022, Honda unleashed the sixth generation of its Civic Type R for the 2023 model year, once again setting the hot-hatch segment ablaze.
Boasting over 25 years of legacy, the Type R name has always exuded the essence of a performance machine in disguise. This was a vehicle equally adept at ferrying kids to school, running errands, or dominating the racetrack. With the debut of the sixth generation, built on the Civic’s eleventh iteration, Honda finally united a turbocharged engine with all-corner independent suspension.
Compared to its predecessor’s manga-inspired, over-the-top design with a massive rear wing, the 2023 Type R adopted a more subdued appearance. Its front end showcased a distinctive red H badge on a black grille, while the lower bumper featured functional side air intakes enhancing aerodynamics. Honda also incorporated a functional hood scoop to channel cool air into the engine bay. At the rear, the prominent wing became an optional extra, no longer a standard fixture across all Type Rs.
Inside, the Type R diverged from its regular Civic counterpart with sport bucket seats boasting cut-outs for racing harnesses in the tall seatbacks. The driver faced a TFT screen, while a digital display sat atop the center stack. Unlike the standard Civic, the Type R sported a gearstick on the center console.
Powering the vehicle was a revised version of the K20C1 inline-four engine from the fifth generation, delivering improved performance over its predecessor. True to form, this iteration remained exclusive to a six-speed manual transmission, staying true to the Type R lineage.
