In 2018, Ford introduced an updated version of the Transit Connect Wagon at the Chicago Auto Show. This innovative vehicle successfully blended the practical functionality of a minivan with the fuel economy typical of a midsize sedan.
Capitalizing on the Transit’s status as the world’s most popular light commercial vehicle, Ford extended the renowned nameplate to this compact MPV. The model catered to both commercial and private users, serving as both a delivery van and a family transport solution. The updated iteration brought a comprehensive array of features to North America, making it equally appealing to fleet operators and family consumers.
The North American variant of the Transit Connect Wagon showcased subtle differences compared to its European counterpart. The front fascia featured a badge mounted on a wide black grille, whereas European models displayed it on the hood. The lower bumper sported a unique design with a distinctive apron incorporating a grille flanked by fog lamp housings. The vehicle’s profile was characterized by an upward-sloping beltline originating from flared wheel arches and extending toward the rear, accentuating the exposed sliding door track. Rear configurations offered a choice between a refrigerator-style door or a conventional wide tailgate.
The interior provided seating for up to seven passengers, depending on the chosen wheelbase configuration, with the shorter version accommodating five occupants. The model boasted impressive features for its segment, particularly in safety technology, including Automatic Emergency Braking with Pre-Collision Assist and Pedestrian Detection. Ford’s technological advancements were also evident in the vehicle’s entertainment system, featuring the Sync3 interface with a 6.5-inch touchscreen display.
Powering the vehicle were two engine options: a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated gasoline engine with direct fuel injection or a 1.5-liter turbocharged unit. Both engines were mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission driving the front wheels.
