The iconic Ford Mustang pioneered the pony car category, marking a triumphant moment for the Blue Oval brand after years of navigating market trends. Its debut proved to be an unqualified success.
The vehicle’s design paid homage to the classic 1964 Mustang, featuring distinctive elements such as three vertical taillights, a sleek fastback silhouette, and an elongated hood. While the front end deviated from the original’s circular headlights, the design team executed a more contemporary interpretation with a flat, hexagonal grille accented by the iconic silver galloping horse emblem, paying tribute to the car’s heritage.
The interior accommodated four passengers, though space was somewhat constrained due to the greenhouse profile and the design of the front seats. Drivers benefited from the SYNC 3 infotainment system, which offered smartphone integration capabilities. A nostalgic touch was added through the use of toggle switches on the center console, echoing the retro-inspired design theme.
Under the hood, the Mustang lineup provided three engine options: a turbocharged four-cylinder, a 3.7-liter V6, and a potent 5.0-liter V8. Notably, the four-cylinder and V8 variants were available in European markets, while the V6 configuration was not offered there. Standard equipment included a 6-speed manual transmission, with a 6-speed automatic transmission available as an alternative. A significant improvement over previous generations was the exclusive use of an independent four-wheel suspension system in the 2017 Mustang, which enhanced cornering performance compared to earlier models that utilized a live axle setup.
