The success of the Ford F-series pickup truck is not accidental. Originating over a century ago, this vehicle has earned its prominent position in American culture through its exceptional durability and continuous technological advancements. Initially, its appeal was driven by the availability of a flathead V-8 engine, followed by the innovative twin-I-beam front suspension system. More recently, the truck has pioneered the use of aluminum bodywork in the industry and embraced smaller, turbocharged engines. This evolution spans from the original Model TT chassis cab introduced in 1917 to the modern luxury four-door models with leather interiors.
For the 2018 F-150, Ford introduced several exterior updates and new wheel options, but the most significant changes were under the hood. The truck’s base engine was upgraded to a new 3.3-liter V-6 with direct injection, replacing the older 3.5-liter V-6. Additionally, after much anticipation, the F-150 gained its first half-ton diesel engine option, based on the Lion turbo-diesel 3.0-liter V-6, which came with numerous enhancements tailored specifically for American truck usage.
As America’s top-selling vehicle, the 2021 Ford F-150 maintains its familiar design while receiving a modern makeover. The most impressive updates are found inside the cabin, where the truck now features a 12.0-inch touchscreen display, matching the Ram 1500, along with a retractable gear selector that transforms the center console into a workspace. The lineup retains five engine choices from the previous year, including a 5.0-liter V-8 and four V-6 options: twin-turbocharged engines of 2.7 and 3.5 liters, a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel, and a naturally aspirated 3.3-liter engine.
Ford has taken the F-150 into the electric era with its most cutting-edge technology. The all-electric F-150 Lightning, while externally similar to the current 14th-generation F-150, offers a unique driving experience thanks to its all-wheel drive configuration, crew cab design, low center of gravity, and substantial curb weight.
The high-performance Raptor variant returns with its signature 450-horsepower twin-turbo V-6 engine. However, 2023 brings a significant upgrade with the introduction of the Ford F-150 Raptor R, featuring a powerful 700-horsepower 5.2-liter supercharged V-8 engine, positioning it as a strong competitor to the 702-horsepower Ram 1500 TRX.
