In early 2024, Ford updated the third generation of its European compact crossover Kuga, equipping the successful model with 5G technology and other crucial improvements.
The automaker maintained a competitive advantage in the market where consumers shifted from station wagons and minivans to crossovers and SUVs. Ford’s extensive expertise in manufacturing 4x4 vehicles allowed it to maintain a leading position among competitors. Although not the market leader in Europe, it outperformed many rivals. The third-generation Kuga entered the market in spring 2019 and, despite sales declining during the global pandemic, the crossover recovered to become the top-selling PHEV in the European market in 2021 and 2022. To retain customer loyalty and attract them back to Ford dealerships, the company launched an updated version of the Kuga in 2024.
The update introduced the Active trim level, designed for those seeking a more adventurous vehicle, alongside other enhancements. Although not a rugged off-road vehicle, it could still handle unpaved roads effectively. The entire updated Kuga range received a new front fascia with an LED strip that visually connected the redesigned, elongated headlights. The upper grille showcased a new hexagonal pattern with the Ford logo at its center. Below, on the bumper, the automaker added a light-gray air intake that resembled a skid plate, despite being made of plastic. The Active package also included new side scoops housing round fog lamps. Additionally, the Kuga was available in ST trim, featuring new trims around the side scoops that directed air around the vehicle, creating an air curtain.
From the side, the Kuga featured black B- and C-pillars and trims around the windows. While the overall shape of the crossover remained similar to the non-facelifted version, several details made it appear different. Moreover, the new design for the alloy wheels and turn signals integrated into the body-colored door mirrors gave the vehicle a more premium look. Finally, at the rear, the 2024 Kuga boasted wide taillights that extended from the rear quarter panels onto the metallic tailgate.
Inside, the automaker equipped all versions with high-bolstered front seats. The Active trim level featured seats with an “A” embroidered on the seatbacks. The dashboard housed a wide touchscreen with Ford’s SYNC 4 infotainment system, offering 5G connectivity. It also included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with built-in Alexa. Passengers could enjoy ample headroom throughout the cabin. Additionally, the rear bench seat could slide, providing over a meter (3 feet) of extra legroom for rear passengers.
Under the hood, the 2024 Kuga offered both mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions, with power delivered to either the front wheels or all four corners via either a manual or automatic transmission.
