In 2018, Ford celebrated the three-year anniversary of the F550’s new generation launch by presenting an updated model featuring advanced safety technologies that enhanced its robust design.
For over seven decades, the Ford F550 held the title of the world’s best-selling vehicle, and the American automaker consistently worked to maintain its competitive edge, setting new standards for rivals to follow. The 2018 iteration of the F550 once again showcased Ford’s ability to create a durable vehicle and further enhance its strength.
To achieve a lighter vehicle weight, Ford engineers opted for aluminum body panels instead of steel, specifically choosing military-grade aluminum for added durability. The vehicle’s frame featured a high-strength steel boxed ladder design, which contributed to increased payload capacity and improved towing capabilities. The front end was reimagined with a chrome double-slat grille and mesh insert, giving the F550 a sophisticated appearance suitable for family adventures in any location. The vehicle’s capability was further emphasized by its flared wheel wells and large all-terrain tires.
The interior received upgrades with higher-quality materials and ergonomic seating for five passengers. A spacious center console with ample storage divided the front seating area. The cabin design included rear doors and extended seating, ensuring generous legroom for passengers in the back.
Powering the F550 was a selection of three gasoline engines, ranging from a 2.7-liter turbocharged unit to a 5.0-liter naturally aspirated V8. The standard powertrain consisted of a 3.3-liter engine paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission, while other configurations featured a 10-speed automatic transmission as standard equipment.
