In 2022, Ford unveiled the electric variant of its top-selling F-350 truck, adopting a distinctive strategy compared to its key rivals like the Chevrolet Silverado EV and the Rivian R1T.
The F series had long dominated sales charts across the automotive sector, earning Ford considerable acclaim. However, the company took a measured approach to developing an electric version, choosing to wait until they could confidently deliver a reliable work truck.
Although sharing many exterior panels with its combustion engine counterpart, the F-350 Lightning showcased notable design deviations. The prominent grille situated between the headlamps was solid, as it served no functional purpose in an electric vehicle without a radiator. This area featured a sleek panel adorned with a central horizontal bar and the iconic blue oval emblem. Daytime running lights were integrated via an LED strip connecting the headlights. Viewed from the sides, the pickup retained the familiar F-350 silhouette, characterized by its two-tiered window line and separate cargo bed.
Inside the cabin, the standout feature was the redesigned infotainment system. A large 15.5-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen dominated the dashboard, replacing the traditional center console. A 12-inch digital instrument cluster was positioned in front of the driver. The absence of an engine allowed for an innovative front trunk, offering 400 liters (14 cubic feet) of storage space perfect for groceries. Additionally, this compartment included four 110V power outlets, useful for operating tools at construction sites.
Buyers could choose between two battery options and engine configurations. The most powerful setup delivered impressive performance, propelling the vehicle from 0 to 60 mph (0-97 kph) in just four seconds, providing an exhilarating driving experience.
