Ford unveiled a comprehensive update to the sixth-generation Explorer SUV in early 2024, five years after its initial launch, introducing significant enhancements for the 2025 model year.
As America’s all-time best-selling SUV, the Explorer received a well-deserved facelift for the 2025 model year. Despite its strong customer reception, Ford recognized the need for upgrades. The automaker streamlined the lineup from seven trim levels to just four, while also adding more standard features across the range. These changes were aimed at maintaining the three-row SUV’s appeal to consumers.
The front end of the 2025 Explorer showcases different grille designs depending on the trim level. The ST and ST Line models feature a black grille accented with red badges, while the Platinum trim boasts a sophisticated honeycomb pattern combining chrome and black elements. All versions share a similar lower bumper design with a slim, wide air intake at the bottom flanked by fog lamp-equipped side scoops.
From the side profile, the Explorer’s cab-rearward design is typical of a rear-wheel drive-based vehicle, accentuated by a slightly sloping roofline and an upward-sweeping waistline. Ford enhanced the SUV’s rugged appearance with black moldings around the wheel arches. The ST and ST Line versions feature distinctive badges on the sides and tailgate, a detail absent on the Active (base model) and Platinum trims.
While the exterior changes were evolutionary, the interior received a dramatic overhaul. The dashboard was repositioned forward to create additional space for front passengers. The center stack now houses a 13.2-inch landscape-oriented touchscreen infotainment system, complemented by a standard 12.3-inch LCD instrument cluster across the range. Both displays are integrated via a shared computer system, allowing for seamless information transfer between screens. The 2025 Explorer introduces the Ford Digital Experience, which links Google accounts to the vehicle, synchronizing music, apps, and location preferences. The cabin also features upgraded materials compared to previous models, though the third-row seating remains somewhat cramped for adult occupants.
Powering the vehicle is Ford’s familiar 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine, paired with a standard ten-speed automatic transmission delivering power to all wheels. The ST trim stands out as both the most expensive and powerful variant, exclusively offering a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 engine producing 300 hp (304 PS).
