In 2010, Ferrari unveiled the 599 GTO (Gran Turismo Omologata) - a track-focused evolution of the 599 GTB Fiorano that pushed the boundaries of performance for front-engine V12 supercars. With a price tag roughly 30% higher than its GTB sibling, the 599 GTO wasn’t just a badge upgrade - it was a street-legal distillation of Ferrari’s racing DNA.
Unlike some Ferraris that start on the track and then are tamed for road use, the 599 GTO was a GT car that was radically transformed for hardcore performance. Drawing heavily from the 599XX experimental track program, the GTO shed about 100 kg (220 lbs) compared to the GTB. The weight savings came from extensive use of carbon fiber, including lightweight seats, interior trim, and thinner glass. Ferrari also reworked the car’s aerodynamics, improving both downforce and cooling.
Visually, the 599 GTO was aggressive and purposeful. The front grille was swapped for a mesh design, flanked by larger air intakes and vented hoods to improve airflow and engine cooling. The side profile was defined by bespoke light-alloy wheels that showcased massive carbon-ceramic brakes - standard on the GTO and engineered for consistent, fade-free braking during extended high-speed driving. Around back, Ferrari added a revised rear diffuser and a new splitter with three vertical fins instead of two, maximizing airflow under the car and enhancing stability at speed.
Inside, the GTO abandoned the plush luxury of the GTB for a focused, motorsport-inspired layout. The cabin featured deeply bolstered carbon-fiber racing seats, embroidered with the GTO logo, and minimal distractions - no rear seats, stripped-down trim, and even lighter door panels. It was still unmistakably Ferrari but now with an unapologetically brutal, racing-bred soul.
Under the hood, Ferrari refined the legendary 6.0-liter V12, bumping it up to 661 horsepower (50 hp more than the GTB), allowing the GTO to sprint from 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) in just 3.3 seconds. That made it the fastest Ferrari road car at the time - not just in a straight line but also on track, thanks to improved handling dynamics, quicker gear changes from the F1-style transmission, and sharper responsiveness from revised suspension and stability systems.
