The Ram ProMaster made its debut on the North American market, encompassing both the United States and Canada, in the year 2014. Despite its relatively recent entry into the competitive landscape of American conversion vans, the heritage of both the vehicle and its manufacturer spans several decades.
The origins of what would later become Dodge Ram can be traced back to the 1970s, when the company was known as Fargo Trucks. During this period, the company primarily focused on manufacturing vans and trucks for international markets outside the United States. Development of the collaborative Fiat Ducato/Ram ProMaster cargo van commenced following Ram’s separation from Dodge and Chrysler, after Chrysler’s acquisition of the Italian automaker Fiat in 2010.
Interestingly, a precursor to the ProMaster—essentially a rebadged Mercedes-Benz Sprinter—was already available in the United States before the introduction of the 2014 model. This earlier iteration was marketed in the U.S. from approximately 2003 until 2009, laying the groundwork for the eventual launch of the Ram ProMaster.
