The fifth iteration of the Dodge Caravan made its debut at the 2007 North American International Motor Show, exclusively in a long-wheelbase configuration.
Multi-purpose vehicles had long been a Chrysler specialty, and this was evident with the unveiling of the 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan. Following four generations of being offered in two different lengths, the manufacturer opted for a one-size-fits-all approach. For certain markets, the vehicle was also available with a European-spec diesel engine.
Externally, one of the most notable enhancements was the redesign of the headlights, which were taller than their predecessors. The styling moved away from the SUV-inspired look seen in competing models, adopting a more subdued MPV aesthetic characterized by squared-off bodywork and rounded wheel arches.
The interior featured three rows of seating. The second row could be folded flat and stowed away into the floor, while the third row was removable, allowing the vehicle to be quickly transformed into a light commercial vehicle. For the second and third-row occupants, there was an option for ceiling-mounted DVD players, complete with individual screens and headphones for personalized entertainment.
In terms of drivetrain, the fifth-generation model abandoned the all-wheel-drive option from its predecessor, being offered solely with front-wheel drive. Power options included a 3.3-liter V6 engine paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission, while the remaining four engine choices were mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission.
