After the Rendezvous and the Rainier, Buick made its third move into the crossover segment with the 2008 Enclave, unveiled in 2007, signaling the automaker's intent to compete in the upscale SUV market.
The 2008 Buick Enclave was based on the same platform as the Chevrolet Traverse and the GMC Acadia. However, it marked a significant departure from Buick’s previous crossover models, which had more traditional SUV styling. Unlike the Rendezvous and the Rainier, the Enclave adopted a more refined approach, mixing elements of an MPV, an SUV, and a sedan. This gave it a unique appeal, combining luxury, comfort, and style with a focus on a quiet interior and design features that echoed the brand's mid-20th century style.
The front of the 2008 Buick Enclave stood out with almond-shaped, swept-back headlights flanking a waterfall-styled grille, all surrounded by chrome trim. The bumper sported a shiny horizontal slat, with corner-mounted turn signal and parking lights located beneath it. To enhance the cooling system, Buick added a secondary rectangular air intake on the lower side of the bumper, along with a lip spoiler at the apron’s bottom.
In 2012, Buick unveiled the refreshed 2013 Enclave, a vehicle that continued to lead the three-row crossover segment. It featured the same underpinnings as the Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia but distinguished itself with luxurious interior features and improved comfort settings, particularly for its seven-passenger configuration. It also introduced an airbag between the front occupants for added safety during a crash. Despite these updates, the engine – a 3.6-liter V6 – remained unchanged.
The 2013 Buick Enclave received a more aggressive front-end redesign, with swept-back headlights now featuring LED daytime running lights and HID headlamps. These flanked a waterfall-style grille with double vertical slats, and the Buick badge took center stage. The redesigned hood included a power dome, with narrow vents reminiscent of the brand’s signature portholes. Below, the plastic bumper had a trapezoidal air intake flanked by slim side scoops to house the fog lamps.
Ten years after the Enclave’s debut, Buick introduced the second generation of the model, which was a far cry from its minivan-inspired predecessor. This second-generation Enclave came with a fully evolved SUV design, focusing on more stylish and premium characteristics. Though it shared its platform with the GMC Acadia and Chevrolet Traverse, it stood apart as a more refined option. The front featured a large grille supported by horizontal chrome slats, flanked by standard LED headlights. The front bumper also had a lower A-shaped center grille, with additional scoops for the LED fog lamps. From the side, the vehicle’s long nose and raked windshield lent it a more traditional SUV shape, with wide glass areas and an ascending lower window line.
The back of the Enclave had a curved tailgate with a roof spoiler, and the bumper featured fake chrome exhaust tips, enhancing its sleek profile.
The third-generation Buick Enclave, unveiled in the spring of 2024, was a major step forward for the automaker. The updated model continued to emphasize technology and advanced safety features, including Super Cruise, GM’s hands-free driver assistance system. The 2024 Enclave was powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, offering better fuel efficiency without sacrificing performance. It was available in three trims: Preferred, Sport Touring, and Avenir. The Enclave continued to offer a well-equipped seven-seat configuration and could tow up to 5,000 pounds (2,268 kg). It also featured a design language influenced by the 2022 Buick Wildcat concept car.
The front fascia of the 2024 Enclave featured a broad grille flanked by LED headlights housed in scoops, with eyebrow-like daytime running lights above. The lower bumper was beefier, with a trapezoidal air intake underlined by silver or black trim, depending on the trim level. The Sport Touring version came with a High Gloss Black front fascia finish and inserts.
